Women have a high sense of self worth and professional ambition to match. Yet most women are unable or unwilling to travel extensively, relocate, work long hours, network, dedicate time for pro¬fessional development, and look at long term. Career does not rank first in their priority, but family. In an interaction with Ms. Jayati Singh, Global Head- Marketing, Tally Solutions reveals some interesting facts.

How women at managerial posts are viewed by your organisation?
In an organization where the Chairperson is a lady, says a lot about the fact that women in general are encouraged and entrusted with managerial positions. Currently nearly 20% of the total female count in the organization is at managerial role and are entrusted with key responsibilities.

How do you see your ‘role sets’ evolving in the IT world?
Personally I wouldn’t want to see it as “role sets” there are no reasons to have role sets. The common perception of “women specific” jobs and man’s world etc is changing. You find more and more women getting into tech, tech start-ups, sales etc so I really don’t see any role sets evolution as such. The field is open to all, what we all need is an open mind.

How a woman can execute challenging tasks, and can bring desired results in corporate world?
Honestly, things are changing in the corporate world for better. There are so many examples of big corporations being run by women very successfully. Not just as heads of companies but also heads of functions, verticals, leading from the front and managing large teams. To bring in the desired results, irrespective of the gender, what are needed are conviction and the ability to influence and convince the stakeholders. I think a good blend of IQ and EQ is what helps.

Do you think, a woman at decision-making position can understand the channel issues more sensitively?
Again, I think this has nothing to do with gender. Yes, traditionally we’ve not seen many women in sales but in IT world, in enterprise sales, you would find increasing numbers. The channel understanding comes from immersing oneself and making an effort to look for insights and urge to learn that holds true for men and women equally.

What type of challenges are you faces in corporate business?
In my 19 years of career, there have challenges from as basic as not having a ladies restroom at distributor locations to regular mansplaining in the early years. If you ask, is there a glass ceiling in corporate world, I would think there is, from personal experience however I believe women are coming around to finding their ways of breaking the glass ceiling. Personally, the challenges do reduce with performance, assertion, not necessarily aggression. The issues actually lie in the fact that gender sensitization in work space is not taken too seriously and that’s because its only in recent years that corporates have begun focussing on inclusion and gender diversity. I think specifically the life-stage changes are the times that specifically are challenging for women in General and requires more sensitization.

Being a woman, how did you balance between your family, relationships and work?
It’s all about personal choices coupled with an understanding and supportive organization and family. I am clear that for me family comes first, however my family too understands that work is important for me and therefore the expectations are set accordingly. Weekends are with family and friends and on other days, we definitely make sure to have dinner together. Important is to ensure that the primary responsibilities at both work and family are fulfilled. It may not be 100% at both at all times but intent is to know that “I did my best”

What are your future plans?
I’ve just started at this great organization and for me important is to add value and work towards the realization of the company’s vision, so of course focus is set for that.
