Women have a high sense of self worth and professional ambition to match. Yet most women are unable or unwilling to travel extensively, relocate, work long hours, network, dedicate time for pro¬fessional development, and look at long term. Career does not rank first in their priority, but family. In a discussion with Deepti Sharma, Head of Marketing for SUSE reveals some interesting facts.

How women at managerial posts are viewed by your organisation?
SUSE is one of the companies which provide equal opportunity to right talent and prefer growth driven leadership irrespective of gender. I believe that every role comes with certain challenges as well as with rewards. With the proper skill set you can excel in any field and within any organization and that’s what matters in SUSE.

How do you see your ‘role sets’ evolving in the IT world?
To comprehend women’s roles as global leaders, it is important to understand the approaches that women use to lead effectively as global leaders, such as utilizing multiple intelligences and authentic leadership. The one mantra for effective leadership is to support and hold the team and management to a consistently high standard of work.

How a woman can execute challenging tasks, and can bring desired results in corporate world?
If you’re willing to do the hard work and utilize your skillset well in your field, you can bring about positive changes to your organization. The organizations are now more open in the appointment of women to their top leadership ranks, knowing the ability and competence they carry. Companies now comprehend that the women are far better positioned to outperform competitors with both a powerhouse cadre of executives and intimate marketplace connections. I always believe that women are unique in many ways as they come with stronger conviction, social values, ethos, diversity and resilience.

Being a woman, how did you balance between your family, relationships and work?
No one will provide a work-life balance. You must seek it. I think for me it’s really about, how do you be present at the times when it matters most? Sometimes it’s going to be work, and sometimes it is going to be home. I believe the women who choose to balance both families and careers have the sense of self-worth and accomplishment which they earn from their careers and will ultimately make them better and more inspiring women.

What are your future plans?
In India, SUSE is growing by double digits, and with open source being at the heart of the Indian government’s IT Policy, SUSE is expanding at a significant rate. SUSE powers the ‘Make in India’ initiative established by the government, by enabling cloud services and value-added service providers with cutting-edge, enterprise-class open source technologies. Moreover, adoption of open solutions from SUSE allows these organizations to build products and solutions that are comparable to their foreign counterparts. Software defined storage and Container-as-a-Service are the next two attractions for global enterprises.
Microservices running in Docker-like containers, on an open and scalable cloud infrastructure are the future of applications. OpenStack-based cloud infrastructures are going to be an absolute necessity for enterprises for a successful DevOp journey. The flexibility and interoperability apart, the open cloud allows the DevOps team to reuse the same infrastructure as and when containers are created.
