To avoid competing solely on price, some vendors have decided to focus on enterprise projects where clients are willing to spend more for advanced technology and a brand they recognize and associate with quality. For these vendors, tailoring their solutions for particular verticals is an important part of this targeted approach to winning business.

India has the world’s second largest population, an expanding middle class and undoubtedly a huge market which attracts international investors. Some of the world’s largest corporations have offices in India. In the Information Age, the market revolves around data and companies which produce technologies capable of mining such data are on the rise. Simultaneously, companies selling surveillance technologies appear to be on the peak too, especially since the global War on Terror requires law enforcement agencies around the world to be equipped with the latest surveillance gear.

Terrorism is undoubtedly a major issue in India, especially in light of the numerous terrorist attacks over the last twenty-five years. With a population of over a billion people and high levels of mass poverty, multiple religions, languages, and ethnicities-crime also appears to be a major security threat in India. As such, Indian law enforcement agencies are in need of tools to aid them in tackling crime and terrorism in the country. Such tools can include various types of surveillance technologies, which are being used by law enforcement agencies around the world.

IP Video Surveillance and CCTV are quickly becoming the norm in public spaces. Emerging video surveillance tools allow for greater networking of cameras, greater fields of vision, cheaper access and come with a host of tools such as facial recognition and tracking as well as vehicle tracking.

The video surveillance market in India is expected to reach Rs 5718 cr (US$841 million) in 2016, with a CAGR of 32.49%. It is expected to top US$ 2.4 billion by 2020. Currently, though analog-based surveillance systems have accounted for majority of the share (68%) in the overall market, yet IP-based surveillance systems are expected to increase in the next five years due to increasing IP infrastructure, declining prices and demand for remote access. According to ‘India CCTV Camera Market Outlook, 2021,’ the India CCTV Camera market is expected to grow with a CAGR of about 27.16% in the period from 2016 to 2021.

The Indian surveillance market is witnessing immense growth from sectors such as city surveillance, hospitality, airport security, BFSI, retail, BPO, manufacturing, college campuses, infrastructure companies and education. The government, in general, is the biggest segment in terms of volume demand. The private sector also shows vast potential. About 87% of surveillance needs are for commercial purpose, whereas 13% are for residential.

Current Scenario

According to Yogesh B. Dutta, COO – CP PLUS, in the last few years, technological advancement in video surveillance has helped in shaping the industry. Consistent with the ongoing demand from heightened security needs, the video security market continues to experience a technology transition from relatively passive analogue CCTV video systems to more sophisticated network-based IP video solutions that include integrated analytics.

“Surveillance has become the sine qua non (necessity or prerequisite) to ensure personal, public and property safety.  The total Indian video surveillance market which was reported to be around US$1.58 billion in 2014 is expected to reach to US$8.24 billion by 2022, while growing at a CAGR of 22.96% during the forecast period from 2015 to 2022.  Though analog based surveillance systems have accounted for majority of the share (around 68%) in the overall market, yet IP based surveillance systems are expected to increase in the next five years due to increasing IP infrastructure, declining prices and demand for remote access. As better security systems are mandatory in the current scenario surveillance has been playing a major role in preventing crime against people and loss to property.  The rising incidents of crime, burglary, bank robbery and the growing awareness about benefits of constant surveillance among the people have primarily driven the Indian surveillance security market,” said, Ashish P. Dhakan, MD & CEO, Pramahikvision (India) Pvt. Ltd.

“Infrastructure growth and safety awareness is driving investments in the Indian market for surveillance expenditure from both the government and the private customers. Rapid urbanization is increasing the demand for surveillance solutions from Tier II and Tier III cities. The market is fast changing with new technologies being introduced coupled with the technological advancement being more towards integrated, and software based solutions. Digital is raising requirements with focus on connected offerings,” said, Sharad Yadav, General Manager, Honeywell Security and Fire, India.

“According to an IHS report India’s market for network video cameras is estimated to reach USD 194.7 million by 2020. Although there is a majority market share of analog systems, this is poised for a change in the coming years. The next decade will see proliferation of IP based video surveillance systems which will replace analog systems. The verticals with the highest market share in terms of revenue are government & transportation, commercial offices and banking & financial followed by the upcoming sectors such as retail, residential, and industrial,” concluded, Sudhindra Holla, Country Manager, India & SAARC, Axis Communications

Latest Technology Trends

“The Indian electronic surveillance is moving towards integrated security solutions, created by integrating multiple systems, including video, intrusion, video analytics, fire, access control, HVAC, chemical and biological sensors, etc. Such systems would offer actionable intelligence and decision support to the organization. The video surveillance landscape has changed significantly for the better in recent times. High-definition network cameras have become cheaper and more plentiful in recent years. Cloud based solutions are also increasing. The emergence of network video and remote monitoring devices and the advent of advanced applications in security products, surveillance is now a tool for gathering both business intelligence and other applications. Growths of High Definition Solutions are steadily gaining grounds. Growth of IP CCTV Security applications are getting more mobile based so that the user can have a control over his/her security from anywhere. Video analytics are becoming popular,” elaborated Ashish P. Dhakan, MD & CEO, Pramahikvision (India) Pvt. Ltd.

On the upcoming technology surprises, he said, “Body wearable camera footage could have a major role to play in facial recognition and people tracking. The technological barriers to real-time streaming are coming down. There is scope to tie together all this data and camera footage into a real-time system to help the cop on the street. The IoT in surveillance projects, vehicle tracking, connected cars, and home automation. Unmanned drones for aerial surveillance. Satellite based maritime surveillance for civil government customers. Mobile-based apps can also be used to track crime.”

“In India, the preference has been for analog based surveillance systems but recent trends indicate a shift towards IP based surveillance systems, used increasingly in different verticals across private and public sector. Honeywell’s redefined IP Video portfolio feature a simplified user interface with full integration to recording devices with new technology that makes checking the status of the system faster and easier. Designed to meet customer’s security needs, Honeywell equIP cameras provide enterprise grade security while Performance series cameras provide cost effective value for Small and Medium sized sites. It avoids redundancy with greater service uptime. The solution’s scalability makes it useful for a wide range of multi-site applications, such as a domestic bank securing ATMs and branches across the country, or a multi-site franchise protecting its facilities against theft or vandalism. The system provides real-time surveillance of premises enabling efficient operations, profitability, and peace of mind. With its simple and easy-to-use interface for what are otherwise complex operations, the system offers a seamless experience with a standardized interface. Internet of Things (IoT) and increasing dependence on connected solutions is shifting the market focus towards convergence of platforms with IP technology backed by open platform and video analytics integration. IoT is driving the need for edge based devices interconnectedness to central intelligence/ analytics hub. We see increasing adoption of edge based analytics in applications like city surveillance and traffic management for Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) & Red Light Violation Detection System (RLVDS). Video analytics is also penetrating mid segment applications like POS integration, people counting, facial recognition, masking for retail and banking verticals,” he added further.

“The adoption of advanced technologies in surveillance is the biggest trend to look out for. Consumers are no longer interested in low cost, general purpose cameras. They want highly sophisticated solutions, such as thermal imaging, low-light receptor, advanced sensors and facial identification etc. Earlier, there wasn’t much scope for these products as only enterprises would opt for them. Now, with the increase in urbanization and crime rates, people are far more cautious and want to adopt these solutions available in the market. Facial recognition and license plate recognition are two of the most sought after technologies as merely recording and archiving video footage is not enough. Small and Medium Business (SMB) owners are much more aware of their security needs than ever before. They install the medium scale systems to secure their premises to avoid any untoward instances,” said, Sudhindra Holla, Country Manager, India & SAARC, Axis Communications.

“IP surveillance has advanced considerably to offer a host of capabilities. Integrated solutions have been a major trend, where various systems of an enterprise/ home, such as Video Door Phones, Intrusion Alarm systems, etc. can be integrated into a single security solution. Also acing the list is video analytics, where cameras are programmed to trigger alarms should the set rules be violated. It offers a host of capabilities such as face recognition, trip wire, scene change, missing objects, intrusion, etc. Mobile surveillance is also gaining momentum; mobile vehicles can now be surveyed in real-time, and their routes and location tracked using GPS. The 360 degree Fish Eye camera has taken the market by storm as well with its ability to substitute for multiple cameras, and offer a 360 degree view of any premise offering remarkable clarity and state-of-the-art features such as dewarping. Yet another revolutionary technology that’s gaining ground is thermal imaging – cameras with the ability to map images by detecting temperature variations. This technology plays a very specific role but has a wide, and even some very crucial applications. Also populating the list is the auto tracking PTZ IP camera equipped with 500m laser IR for unbeatable zoom clarity ideal for critical applications such as city surveillance, Body Worn cameras for equipping security forces while they’re on the move, and integrated traffic solutions such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition, Red Light Violation Detection, and Speed Enforcement Systems.  At CP PLUS, we offer all of the above technologies and more. Further innovations are underway, and we hope to introduce more value added products & services to our portfolio of offerings soon,” concluded, Yogesh B. Dutta, COO – CP PLUS.

Challenges in India

“There is a huge potential in India’s security and surveillance segment today. Government initiatives such as Smart Cities, investments in public infrastructure, increasing crime rates, data thefts, and increasing security awareness are boosting the market for surveillance systems in India. Emerging threats to safety and security require a new way of thinking to effectively protect critical assets. The most effective security systems provide actionable intelligence — bringing together the right combination of existing and new technologies into an integrated solution that connects all critical systems and processes, and delivers the right information. Honeywell understands the challenges, essential core processes and environments of our customers. Decades of experience across a wide variety of critical systems and infrastructures, combined with core competencies in process control, high-end security and aerospace engineering, give us unique insight into creating and deploying security and protection solutions which take into account the most critical operational environments. Honeywell is committed to security. It is one of the world’s leading and most experienced manufacturers of electronic security systems protecting millions of homes, businesses and government facilities around the world. Honeywell has the widest security and fire portfolio of products and solutions to meet the safety, security, and fire protection needs of its customers worldwide,” said, Sharad Yadav, General Manager, Honeywell Security and Fire, India.

“Initially, government funded surveillance projects were usually long drawn, owing to the complex web of formalities and sanctions involved. Lack of adequate domain knowledge also made it a challenge to prove the worth of an investment.  However, with the government’s Make in India initiative, these challenges are gradually facing away. Processes are becoming streamlined, and with the government’s emphasis on a Digital India, various initiatives are being taken to educate and train officials, which are, in turn, paving the path for a brighter future. As a proud Indian global multinational, we are immensely hopeful of many more positive changes in the coming times,” said, Yogesh B. Dutta, COO – CP PLUS.

“The deployment challenges include cumbersome procedures, delay in timely approvals, geographical and extreme weather conditions, tough terrains, lack of clear roadmap of the project and the shortage of skilled manpower at remote locations. Owing to these factors the project cost escalates and the completion of the project gets delayed,” concluded, Ashish P. Dhakan, MD & CEO, Pramahikvision (India) Pvt. Ltd.

Biggest contributor to the growth

According to Sudhindra Holla, Country Manager, India & SAARC, Axis Communications, the Government sector has started to see large scale deployments in the Smart City sector. The combination of surveillance with ICT is creating a never-before-imagined security infrastructure that not only provides maximum security to the smart cities but can also be used as an analytical tool for the government. One can keep track of traffic flow, climate changes, criminal zones etc. through this technology. This reduces problems generally faced by the urban populace and the government that can now provide amenities based on real-time data. Individual consumers are also looking at electronic surveillance as an investment today. The safety and security of one’s home is a prime concern for any home owner. Thus they believe in buying products that will provide a larger ROI in the future. Low quality cameras are not a sound investment as they will last only for a few years, whereas, high-quality CCTVs are robust enough to withstand the maximum exposure to the environment.

“Obviously the Government because of the enormity of its projects.  It is followed by the enterprise segment. In the home segment, Cooperative Housing Societies have realized the importance of security and more and more CHSs are installing CCTV cameras, VDPs and other security devices to prevent crime,” said, Ashish P. Dhakan, MD & CEO, Pramahikvision (India) Pvt. Ltd.

“It’s the Home segment, undoubtedly, that will see a boom in the coming years, and prove to be a growth propeller for the security & surveillance industry. The Enterprise segment will follow closely,” concluded, Yogesh B. Dutta, COO – CP PLUS.

Growing Competition

“We are used to competition and we welcome competition. In the next few years the competition will be fierce. Churning will happen leaving the room for quality players. Those who have quality products and customer priority focus will withstand the tough competition. As Hikvision has both we will continue to lead the market despite competition,” said,    Ashish P. Dhakan, MD & CEO, Pramahikvision (India) Pvt. Ltd.

“CP PLUS banks on quality and the ‘customer first’ principle; we aim to make quality security accessible to all. While one cannot sideline competition, we firmly believe that keeping our act true and transparent will ensure we win competition all the way through,” pointed out Yogesh B. Dutta, COO – CP PLUS.

Key Differentiating Factor

“It’s been a good few years for us here at CP PLUS; the brand has grown considerably, spreading its roots deeper and wider across the market. We became the youngest brand to enter the Global Top 7 list of security & surveillance companies, and also ranked among the Top 3 in Asia. Furthermore, we revamped the way we work and tweaked our services to serve our customers even better. Some revolutionary products that CP PLUS recently introduced include the EzyKam range of compact cameras that simplify security, the Cosmic & Astra range of cameras that are compatible with all HD formats, and the BodyWorn cameras that offer mobile security to security personnel. More innovations are underway and we hope to introduce more such value added products & services to our portfolio of offerings in the coming time,” claimed, Yogesh B. Dutta, COO – CP PLUS.

“First of all we never compare our brand with others. We are a global brand having an excellent reception in the Indian market. We are leading in many segments in the security product value chain,” said, Ashish P. Dhakan, MD & CEO, Pramahikvision (India) Pvt. Ltd.

“Honeywell’s redefined IP Video portfolio features a simplified user interface with full integration to recording devices with new technology that makes checking the status of the system faster and easier. Designed to meet customer’s security needs, Honeywell equIP cameras provide enterprise grade security while Performance series cameras provide cost effective value for Small and Medium sized sites. In addition to these cameras, Honeywell MAXPRO Cloud Alarm Monitor provides a simple, scalable cloud based platform to enable remote monitoring across multiple sites,” said, Sharad Yadav, General Manager, Honeywell Security and Fire, India.
