At the NCN-NSS Channel Partners Summit 2017, two separate Panel Discussions were held, first on the Latest Evolving Trends in Networking Space and the second on the recent GST Law and its implications. The panel members in both discussions included several big wigs from the networking and ICT industry. The Panel Discussions were skillfully moderated by Mr.Arvind Passy, Sr.Columnist, to make them engaging and interesting.

Panel Discussions on the Latest Trends in Networking Space

Today, networking space is an area that is fast evolving with the demands increasing for higher speeds, greater performance and most importantly foolproof security over networking devices. The panel members at the Panel Discussion on the Latest Trends in Networking included Mr.Sanjay Sehgal, Vice-President-SMB & Telecom, TP-link,  Mr. Bishwajit Sutradhar, Airlive, Mr. Marthesh Nagendra, Country Manager, India and SAARC, Netgear, Mr. Ashwin Mittal, Regional Manager (North & East), Array Networks,

Sanjay Sehgal of TP-Link shared, “TP-Link’s tagline line is ‘live intuition and work with innovation.’ Networking as we discuss here applies to machines and devices interacting with one another for an expected objective. With the need for communication and data transfer increasing, the networking too has been evolving and expanding. Now, the market needs networking products that are easy-to-use and work smartly and efficiently. We at TP-Link focus on designing products that are not just innovative and reliably smart, but also aesthetically built to look like beautiful showpieces on your desk. TP-Link has been wining Red Dot design awards for beautiful designs for many years, for the aesthetical designs. We sincerely work to provide aestheti;c designs that appeal to the eyes, besides providing the latest technologies.”

Marthesh Nagendra  of Netgear added, “Networking per se is growing very fast both in terms of volumes, technology and capacity of the devices, with the increasing demand for greater amounts of data and the corresponding increases in the bandwidth. Most importantly present day vendors and channel partners should focus more on what networking solutions a particular customer needs according to his specific requirements, than simply selling generalized products. Today, even small organizations use a lot of mobile devices connecting many devices and tracking many things simultaneously. Volumes of data being used are increasing with leaps and bounds. Good availability is achieved with a reliable WiFi system and a good Ethernet. Earlier companies used to interact with partners and colleagues through images and mails, but today they interact through videos and virtualization, all of which demand higher capacities and speeds and in turn higher bandwidth, which entails the integration of networking and high storage. Hence, we should focus on developing routers that meet the demanding needs of the times.”

Biswajit Sutradhar of AirLive, on their go-to-the-market approach as a new entrant into the networking space, commented, “According to Gartner, the Indian market is set to offer huge opportunities in the networking area by 2020. Today, the trend is to offer solutions that are user-friendly, cost-effective and easily serviceable. We have a distribution system that actively works in T2 and T3 cities, in addition to T1 cities. Today, T1 &T2 cities are the areas where future opportunities lie and in these in cities customers want easily serviceable products. Our marketing people collect detailed information from the resellers and customers, basing on which we design our products. Today every home has 6 or 10 connected smart devices which need routers with RAM that allow downloads of heavy files, be it music or movies, which need high bandwidth. We are focusing on providing better service and RMA even to the users living in the rural areas. When we design our routers, we keep in mind the needs of different users using the same router—children may want to download pictures and simple games, young people want to download songs and videos, and so on and the router should be able to enable heavy downloads in short time intervals. It is not simply selling boxes, but providing the right service too. We are focusing on those areas, hitherto have been neglected, to develop our market.”

With a number of different types of different devices being connected, security has become an important issue, which has missed the attention of the most so far.

Ashwin Mittal of Array Networks shared, “At Array Networks we pay special attention to security and availability in addition to performance and aesthetics. More security means it can slow down the speed—we need to make a balance between security and speed. Availability is very important, because if the system goes slow by even for a min, a bank or an ecommerce site can lose millions of rupees business. Doing financial transactions with banks and ecommerce sites has become a common practice nowadays. While people are doing financial transactions, their particulars and also their transactions need to be secure while at the same time availability should be maintained. If an online site like Amazon or Flipkart is not available to the customers for a minute, the loss of revenues can run into millions of rupees. A second delay can make a different person buying the product, instead of a person who started the process to buy earlier. Our technology at Array Networks offers high security and availability to the users, which is of great importance today, while also focusing performance. The products of Array Networks are time-tested and performance-driven.”

Today, in addition to technology and the capacity of the devices, the ecosystem which includes the policies and attitudes of the government also matter. Sanjay Joshi comments, “With the Indian government encouraging digitization and smart cities and trying to take technology to the grassroots levels, which is bound to boost networking. With the growing use of networking, the security threats are also growing faster. All these factors demand high security ecosystem. We have designed routers such that they, in addition to securing SMEs and offices, also will secure consumer-users too, along with giving the ease of connectivity. These routers have security solution at the gateway level, which offers greater security. In my opinion, TV also will become part of networking system in the coming years.”

Talking about the importance of security in networking, Biswajit Sutradhar of Airlive commented, “Nowadays Indian consumers are realizing the importance of security and availability and they are willing to pay that little extra to be on the safer and better side. Security-inbuilt devices may initially cost a bit more, but in the long run they are beneficial. The prices will also come down as many people start using secured networking devices.”

From the audience, Chanchal Deshwal of KCIS (a networking distributor) raised an important issue, “Vendors as well as partners should focus on promoting the right solutions to the right customers. What we observe is in many cases, SOHO solutions are being used for enterprise needs, where they do not work up to the requirements. The level of awareness even among many corporate and SMB users and partners seems to be low. We need to educate the corporate and SME users, and also our partner community in this regard.”

Biswajit Sutradhar added, “The vendors, channel partners and SIs should work objectively with a common policy while educating customers, so that the customers will understand and choose the best networking solutions and our businesses will their purpose in a realistic manner.”

Martesh Nagendra of Netgear asserted, “I came across a case where a hospital has 50 devices on 12 floors that need to be connected and someone suggested those 12 routers, one on each floor. That means when the person crosses each floor, he needs to reconnect to a different router. That is simply ridiculous, as one router would serve the connection needs of all the devices on all the floors. That is what happens when the users are not given proper information and education. This emphasizes the importance of right education to the partners as well as users.”

Sanjay Sehgal of TP-Link, said, “As we know, there is nothing like Free-Lunch. Quality and functionality come at a price. While dealing with customers, we should frankly tell them what exactly they need even if costs high. This sometimes may hurt some customers and turn them away, but as providers and partners it is our moral responsibility to be frank while expressing our sincere opinions even at the cost of losing customers. This attitude will be beneficial to the providers and also to the customers in the long run.”

Ashwin Mittal of Array Networks, “What I suggest is users should be educated on sizing the networking solutions according to their needs. The basic information is already available on the Internet and You Tube. Then we as partners should do our part to increase the awareness among users about the availability of such information and also give them additional guidance so that they can pick the best solutions.”

To sum up, with the spread of digitization, the usage of networking products is expected to increase enormously. Then security factor is gaining importance with the increasing number of security attacks with increasing sophistication. At last better performance, high capacity and good security come at a cost. Partners and consumers should be educated how to select the right products for their networking needs, which at the end keeps the providers and the buyers at a level of higher satisfaction and safety.

Panel Discussion on the Impact of GST

GST has been a hot topic for the last six months that has been affecting both the businesses and consumers in different ways. At the NCN-NSS Networking Channel Partners Summit 2017 held in September, there was an animated Panel Discussion on GST and its Impact. The Panel Members included Mr. Harish Rajput, DGM Government and Large Accounts, Tally Solutions Private Limited, Mr. Deepak Tiwari,   Product Specialist, Tally Solutions Private Limited, Mr. Satpal Singh Viridi, COO, Perfect, Mr. Saket Kapoor, General Secretary of FAITA and Mr.Satyan Shah, Secretary of CMDA, Pune. Below is the abridged version of the Panel Discussion on GST.

The hottest current topic of the industry, the GST, is affecting all of us! The panel members gave their expert views on the current GST regime, its pros and cons, so that it will enhance the awareness in industry help the individuals and associations to negotiate with the authorities for the appropriate amendments.

Harish Rajput  of Tally Software,  said, “At present, the whole GST law looks complex and messy, but let us wait for 6 months, until things get streamlined. Initially, there are bound to be some hiccups and apprehensions, but in the long run, in my opinion, the consumers and also the business community are set to benefit. It also benefits the government by fetching more tax money.”

Not everyone is positive about the current GST law: if some are positive, others are skeptic about the law saying it has increased the costs of some products and services too much, while also adding a lot of additional work in the form of preparing reports, taking time and effort.

Saket Kapoor of FAITA , expressed, “As far as my opinions and the inputs I am getting from the industry are concerned, GST looks more like the California Gold Rush (of USA), when hundreds of enthusiastic gold diggers rushed to California with a desire to find gold and make fortunes, after hearing that there is a lot of gold in California. But at the end, the people who really made most money were not the gold diggers but those who sold the mines and those who sold the mining equipment–there were few gold diggers who became rich from digging gold. Similarly, it seems the ones who are benefitting from GST are mainly GST software providers, CAs and above all the government. How much it benefits the business community and the end consumers is matter of question. Prices of some of the goods have become too much; and the whole exercise of filing returns has become costly and time-consuming adding extra costs.”

Satpal Singh Viridi, COO, Perfect said, “I feel GST is tough to digest within a short time, because it is new. Once things are streamlined and some essential changes are made, GST will be good for both the business and the consumers in the long-run. Now you have to pay only income tax and one GST, not many taxes.”

In the words of Satyen Shah of CMDA, Pune, “According to me, GST is overall a positive step forward by the government. One negative I see is the government has set five tax slabs and this is causing confusion and needs modification. On the other hand, the biggest benefit is a single tax, from manufacturer to the consumer. This law helps to check the inflation while increasing the government’s tax revenues. Under these conditions, we have to wait and see how the government is going to react to different changes the business community wants to be made to GST law. Tally Software is providing software solutions for the businesses for filing GST reports, while at the same time launching several events to educate the businesses and others about GST and how to use their software. Executives from Tally, who are at the front while dealing with GST, shared their views.”

Deepak Tiwari of Tally Software commented, “In most cases, people have been depending on CAs who have been making best of this opportunity to make money. The GST software from Tally is very user-friendly and easy-to-use for the business users and decreases the dependence on CAs to a great extent. To use our software, one need not be an accountant. We are conducting regular seminars and education programs for the business users on how to file GST reports. We are getting regular queries even from the CAs. Once customers are educated about our software, they need not depend on CAs (except for statutory audit).”

Harish Rajput of Tally revealed, “So far, we conducted nearly 7000 education events on the awareness of GST and how to file reports. Now people are gradually realizing that filing GST reports is not as complex as it appears—in fact, it is much simpler. We are taking classes to customers, CAs and to businessmen. The challenge is not with the GST law, but with how people will adapt to the change and the technology. At present, there are some confusing clauses in the law, for example, there is a different GST tax on vehicles and a different tax on vehicle parts. We hope several modifications will soon be made to the current GST law to make it fair and clear.”

On what NRIs are feeling about the current GST law, Satpal Singh Viridi said, “According to me, GST is a positive disruption. In several foreign countries, GST has been there for a long time and for them it is an old concept. So naturally, they appreciate this law.”

According to most commentators, even though the GST causes some stress, confusion and extra work in the beginning, it is set to discourage the unethical practices of those businesses acting in the black and will make the business ecosystem more open and transparent. For those operating in the white-sector, it should be a welcome step and a positive disruption.

Saket Kapoor of FAITA concluded, “In the current format, some businesses are compelled to take GST number, whereas some others do not take it at all. This is leading to discrimination allowing some to avoid GST. I find the current format of GST as inflexible. The present law, on some points, applies the same rules to Kirana shop owners and also to the big business houses. I feel this has to be corrected.”

To conclude, most of the analysts and the industry members believe the GST law is good, but there are some grey patches in the law which needs improvements. We all wish that the government will come up with amendments to the present GST law in the coming months and make it more business- and consumer-friendly. We hope companies like Tally Software will lead the movement by continuously educating people on GST. We wish IT associations will negotiate wisely with the government to get the best deals that will be beneficial to both the consumers and the businessmen.

Saying vote of thanks, Mr. Manoj Jha, Editor-in-Chief, NCN-NSS said, “ I, on behalf of NCN-NSS magazine, thank you all for sparing valuable time for attending and making this Networking Channel Partner Summit 2017 a memorable occasion.  Although, we’ve organized NCN Award Night for the last 10-years but now onwards we’re taking this initiative like Networking Channel Partner Summit in this year. In future we’re going to organize such type of summit time to time. I congratulate all the networking vendors for the recognition.  We wish to make the next summit even more exciting with your support and blessings.”
