As part of this promise, we pledged to develop an ambitious roadmap focused on data residency, access restriction, encryption, and resilience. Today, we are excited to share another significant milestone that further addresses our customers’ sovereignty demands.
Empowering Your Data Location Control
Throughout AWS’s history, our customers have always held the reins of their data’s location. For instance, in Europe, our customers have had the freedom to deploy their data across any of the eight existing AWS Regions. These regions offer a comprehensive array of cloud services and features, enabling versatile workload management. Additionally, the availability of AWS Local Zones, a specialized infrastructure deployment, extends AWS services to more locations, ensuring low latency and adhering to data residency requirements. This innovative approach eliminates the need for self-managed infrastructure deployment. For customers obligated to comply with data residency regulations, opting to operate their workloads in specific geographical regions becomes an option where AWS Regions and Local Zones exist.
Announcing AWS Dedicated Local Zones
In response to feedback from our public sector and regulated industry clients, who demand dedicated infrastructure for their most critical workloads to meet compliance and regulatory mandates, we are thrilled to introduce AWS Dedicated Local Zones. These zones are a form of AWS infrastructure, meticulously managed by AWS, designed exclusively for the use of a single customer or community. Positioned within a location specified by the customer or housed in a designated data center, Dedicated Local Zones facilitate compliance with regulatory prerequisites. Our Dedicated Local Zones come with enhanced security and governance features, including data access monitoring, audit programs, and the ability to restrict infrastructure access to customer-selected AWS accounts. Moreover, we offer the option to enforce security clearance or other criteria on local AWS operating personnel.
Our Dedicated Local Zones extend the benefits of Local Zones, such as scalability, elasticity, and pay-as-you-go pricing, coupled with advanced security and governance capabilities. These zones are operated by local AWS personnel and offer an amalgamation of the cloud’s efficiency and on-premises isolation. Leveraging Dedicated Local Zones, we collaborate with customers to configure their own Local Zones, tailor-fitting them to meet their unique regulatory needs.
Solidifying AWS Security Standards
Just as with AWS Regions and Local Zones, AWS Dedicated Local Zones adhere to our stringent security protocols. They inherit the same high AWS security standards, and they are fortified with the renowned AWS Nitro System, ensuring the utmost confidentiality and integrity of customer data. Leveraging Dedicated Local Zones enables customers to effectively adopt the cloud’s multitenancy features across numerous AWS accounts, streamlining the operational management of on-premises infrastructure. By employing consistent AWS infrastructure, APIs, and tools, customers can simplify their applications’ architecture, while deploying multiple Dedicated Local Zones adds resiliency to their setup.
