GlobalLogic is a digital product engineering company that integrates experience design and complex engineering to help our clients imagine what is possible and accelerate their transition into tomorrow’s digital businesses. Headquartered in Silicon Valley, the company operates design studios and engineering centers around the world, extending the benefits to customers in telecom, automotive, healthcare, technology, media and entertainment, manufacturing, and semiconductor industries. The company combines chip-to-cloud software engineering expertise and vertical industry experience to help our customers design, build, and deliver their next-generation products and digital experiences. In an interaction with Mr. Rohit Madhok, Vice President – Engineering, GlobalLogic about the company’s new initiative and future plans.

What is the role of GlobalLogic in the Indian Engineering Research & Development sector?

In India, GlobalLogic has presence across regions through its development and research centers in Noida, Gurgaon, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Nagpur. With a growing employee base of 7500+ in the country, GlobalLogic is an equal opportunity employer and a responsible organization committed to the ecosystem and community development. For nearly 20 years, we have partnered with businesses across every major industry to deliver remarkable products and connect the dots between people, products, and business opportunities. Since then, we have shown businesses how they can better engage their consumers, innovate within predictable budgets, and bring the next generation of digital products and services to market in the shortest possible time.

Engineering is what we live and breathe daily. As we specialize in digital product engineering, our focus has always been away from pure-play IT services and more towards Deep Engineering expertise. As an Engineering R&D player in the larger India software engineering ecosystem, we stand out and are seen as a breakthrough cutting edge player which sets the tone of how core engineering work is done. We play right up the value chain and many Fortune 100 clients trust us to assist them in digitally transforming their businesses. We are humble but at the same time very proud to be a leading player in this arena.

How GlobalLogic is enabling business continuity and is playing a wider role in supporting the communities amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Role of design-led product engineering in the tech ecosystem as a practice and how important is it for the digital transformation of businesses?

In an increasingly digital world, GlobalLogic approaches UX design from a consumer-first perspective, putting users at the heart of the products we create. GlobalLogic’s Strategic Design studio, Method, takes a holistic approach to experience design. From considering a business’ brand and relationship with its customers to defining coherent & intuitive services, GlobalLogic helps create engaging user experiences that are as strong as the technology behind them.

Having said that from a community perspective, GlobalLogic is an active member of various Indian IT industry bodies where we participate and contribute in our own ways. This has given us a unique position to not only help frame & define policies but also execute them for the industry and community at large. As far as building solutions in these times, we believe in utilizing the POC (Proof of Concept) / MVP (Minimum Viable Products) approach to get a swift start and iterate from there to get to the best possible outcomes in the shortest amount of time.

We are working in our own way during the ongoing situation. Just to cite an example, we have been engaging with a large US client who is using our AI expertise to predict how elevated temperatures can be monitored. This will drive a huge impact on the community our clients reach out to and also the current pandemic. Another good example is the contactless visitor management, security management, e-cafes to authorize physical access.

How the Indian IT industry is leveraging technology expertise to combat ongoing virus outbreak and the overall economic challenges?

I believe the Indian IT industry has done a fantastic job so far. From using AI and Predictive algorithm to identifying potential hot spots to providing e-commerce related services at the very doorstep with a click of a button that too for a population of the size of India is no mean feat.

Keeping the current situation in mind, it is commendable on how AI and technology start-ups in the country are leveraging their tools and solutions to help in combating the ongoing crisis. Just to cite an example here, an Indian robotics start-up has been re-purposing its robots into screening and diagnostics robots that collect essential data such as the name of the patient, symptoms exhibited, and validation such as temperature checks in a contactless manner. Moreover, other Indian start-ups have deployed robots at entrances to office buildings and other public places to dispense hand sanitizer and deliver public health messages about the virus, providing Covid-19 tests at home and online consultation with doctors through different platforms and developing low-cost, easy-to-use, and portable ventilators that can be deployed even in rural areas of India. These ventilators would need medical regulatory approval before they could be deployed.

When do you expect the current situation to return to its normalcy?

See, it is tough to say when this COVID-19 virus will totally disappear from our lives. As of now, the right way to look at this is what is going to be the new normal and how we should learn to live and come back to normalcy with COVID-19. According to the best medical experts, they predict that this will take more than 12 to 18 months from now, even in the best-case scenarios.

A combination of some forward-looking policies like a certain percentage of staff operating from home, only the essential and critical staff returning to work which has already begun, some of our offices are already bringing the critical folks back and on a period of 14-16 weeks, we do want to go into some semblance of normalcy combined with work-from-home. As long as we run “Business as Usual”, it is all good!

How technology is creating the next wave of disruption in the Retail, Healthcare, Telecom, and Manufacturing sector?

Constraints can foster innovation in more ways than you can imagine! In today’s time, I certainly do not think that we have had more constrained evolvement that we have now. Some sectors/industries which are severely hit will evolve and in fact, are evolving and are finding newer business models to support business continuity. To talk about a few sectors, Retail will leapfrog even more significantly into eCommerce, Healthcare, Telemedicine, Remote patient monitoring will become the new norm. In Telecom, 5G towers will get a boost to meet the growing demands of businesses, whereas Manufacturing will use smaller models of 3D printing with the use of software to enable their products.

Technology in all the way has and will continue to play a key role in stabilizing the situation. In the post-COVID-19 phase, technology will be at the heart of new products, services, and experiences.

DARQ as the next phase of growth for technology businesses worldwide. How GlobalLogic play in it?

This is what we consider as Horizon 3 technology which will leapfrog the next-generation evolution. We perceive some solid early shoots of Blockchain with large Finance & Insurance Technology players now with whom we are partnering. In today’s time, Artificial Intelligence as such has reached a point where our clients across industries are now defining how this is actively used for Digital Transformation in EdTech, Telecom with Machine Learning based synthetic data, training of Automobiles to be self-servicing via voice-enabled chatbots are something which we have already rolled out for key clients.

Quantum computing will accelerate this digital journey and bring in exponential changes in the way digital technologies are changing the world. With significantly enhanced computing prowess, this will ensure Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Extended Reality (XR), and other solutions to push the boundaries and create enhanced experiences and solutions for the world. We are also in the early days of building more POV and move towards early-stage MVPs using Quantum Computing.

What are your future plans?

Irrespective of the current pandemic and its repercussions, we realize that our strong push towards defining the future of ER&D will continue the journey which we have defined. While our employees continue to operate from home and start moving back into offices, all our initiatives and projects on Design-led Digital Transformation are continuing and are on track.

We continue to define the transformation roadmap across sectors/industries and evolve our Digital Playbook with its next enhanced version. We also persist in scout for niche players who synergize with industry verticals and Horizontal technologies that highlight GlobalLogic’s capabilities.
