Presently, the Indian government wants to drive forward the concepts of Smart Cities and Digital India with an aim to transform India into a smart nation.  Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, aims at playing a key role in smart cities initiatives to take the smart devices and apps to the citizens. Driven by a commitment to innovation and customer-centric collaboration, Huawei has established a competitive ICT portfolio of end-to-end solutions in telecom and enterprise networks, devices and cloud technology and services. In an interaction with NCN, Chandan Kumar, Director, Marketing & Integrated Solutions, Huawei India, shares their company’s ongoing initiatives and future plans for smart cities in India.

Regarding the hindrances and the progress made in the direction of smart cities and smart homes, and on Huawei’s approach in this regard, Kumar states, “Smart Cities concept involves a wide range of applications; the scope and extent is enormous and not limited to a specific number of applications. But the immediate focus for the smart cities will be on smart street lighting, smart garbage collection, maintaining the municipality digital records, etc that are of primary need to start with. Next step will be developing connected homes, smart bus-stops & airports, smart trafic management and so on. When  compared, Indian cities have different requirements influenced by a different set of conditions. For instance, Singapore is a way ahead in wireline broadband connection, but India is far behind with poor broadband wireline connections. So, we are focusing more on mobile broad as a means to achieve the objective of connectivity.  Now nearly 3G and 4G connect 90% people in India and 5G is on the anvil. When it comes to apps, we are focusing on three concepts: low latency apps, machine to machine (M2M) communications and IoT applications. We are currently in the stage of deploying pilot projects and small scale deployments in India and commercial deployments will start in 2020.”

Huawei’s ICT solutions, products and services are used in more than 170 countries and regions, serving over one-third of the world’s population. With 180,000 employees worldwide, Huawei is committed to enabling the future information society, and building a Better Connected World.

Mr. Chandan Kumar adds, “Huawei has all the essential devices and end-to-end solutions for smart homes like sensors, aggregators, home gateways, OSS, smart parking apps, etc. High prices is an issue only in the short-run, and once the number of deployments increases the prices will automatically come down. The other issue is standardization, which is much needed to enable the devices and apps of different providers to be deployed at a larger scale seamlessly across smart cities, smart homes, vehicle management, etc. We are also working with telcos, device providers and their R&D departments on how to make the 5G technology to be backward compatible, so that 4G and 3G devices can also use the 5G solutions to an extent.”

Huawei continuously innovates to meet customer needs and advance technological leadership and strives to cooperate with industry partners, with a focus on building future-proof information pipes and creating value for the end customers. By staying customer-oriented and inspiring dedication, Huawei continuously improves its corporate governance structure, processes and appraisal systems to attain the holistic goals.

Regarding coordination and interplay between different stakeholders, Kumar comments, “While developing smart cities, there are different stakeholders like builders, SIs, equipment and device vendors, telecom service providers, etc who play different roles, so it needs a coordinated approach by all the stakeholders. We are conducting workshops involving different stakeholders to define ways how different players can work in coordination to provide the best possible solutions in the most efficient way and take the technology to the common man. Globally, we have already deployed a good number of solutions. We are focusing on using and adapting our own and also the telcos’ experiences while working in other countries, to develop the right solutions for the Indian conditions. We are sure that Smart Cities concept will gain momentum in the coming years to take India ahead in progress and development. In India, we are surveying different segments like electrivity, education, transport, etc about precisely what solutions they need. Next, we want the availability of the future-ready devices as 5G needs different acrhitectures and also needs cloudification.”

Huawei strives to work closely with different partners and stakeholders to build a symbiotic business ecosystem that thrives on shared success.
