A new dome theater located within the Northern Shaanxi Folk Song Museum in China’s Shaanxi Province has earned much praise due to its bold innovation, unique style, and fully immersive contents that offers audiences an extraordinary experience.

Powered by 22 Christie DWU850-GS 1DLP laser projectors capable of WUXGA resolution and brightness levels of 8,400 ISO lumens, the projectors are installed and commissioned by Christie’s longstanding Chinese partner Wincomn Technology, which is also responsible for the venue’s projection design. With a diameter of 14 meters, the 360-degree dome theater enables audiences to experience the charm of northern Shaanxifolk culture in a highly immersive fashion. It perfectly complements the museum’s focus on northern Shaanxi folk music by reflecting on its long and stirring historical changes, and embodying a historical and humanistic spirit.

“Northern Shaanxi Folk Song Museum is China’s only museum featuring northern Shaanxi culture, and we are proud to be involved in this monumental project of delivering the projections in this new done theater,” said Tony Chen, general manager, Wincomn Technology. “The Christie GS Series laser projector, with higher levels of brightness, image quality, color reproduction and compact form factor, is the customer’s preferred choice.”

To create a deeper immersive feel beyond conventional dome theaters, the dome theater’s front, left and right sections have been expanded. Likewise, the dome’s height has also been increased, resulting in a larger projection area. Since this dome theatre is not fully spherical and ample walkway space is needed between the rows of seats and on the floor, there were tremendous challenges in executing the projection design.

“The customer has requested for a high pixel count of the entire dome to increase a sense of presence. Furthermore, the visuals cannot appear distorted or warped even though the projection area is large and the curvature of the entire screen is inconsistent. Similarly, there are also stringent requirements for the projectors’ brightness, color imaging, and visual presentation,” Chen said.
